Kaizer Chiefs beat Maritzburg United 2-1 in an Absa Premiership match at Pietermaritzburg’s Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday evening. Willard Katsande scored the game’s opener after which the home side equalised. Siphiwe Tshabalala scored the match winner in the 80th minute.

Games against sides coached by Roger de Sa are never easy. And so it showed on Saturday night when Amakhosi faced Maritzburg.

Chiefs were looking dangerous in the first half, without getting real goal scoring opportunities.

The conditions were wet at the Harry Gwala Stadium. The weather conditions, which included thunder storms and lighting, took care that the match was delayed for 30 minutes until a 20:45 kick-off time.

Bernard Parker looked lively up-front, even though he wasn’t always helped by his teammates. Some of the passing was sloppy.

On the right wing, meanwhile, Joseph ‘Tight’ Molangoane looked lively, even though he was brought down regularly by the Maritzburg defenders.

The first half ended goalless.

There were more chances in the second half for both sides.

It was Willard Katsande who scored the match’s opener in the 50th minute with a header after a fine cross from a free-kick delivered into the box by George Maluleka.

Chiefs stayed positive, looking for the second goal.

However, it didn’t go as coach Steve Komphela wanted and that’s why he substituted Edmore Chirambadare in the 61th minute for the recently signed Venezuelan striker Gustavo Páez.

Five minutes later, William Twala came on for Joseph ‘Tight’ Molangoane.

However, against the run of play, the home side equalised in the 73rd minute via Mohau Mokate.

The second half was entertaining with both sides going for the three points.

It was Chiefs that got ahead again when Tshabalala put a well-directed cross from Ramahlwe Mphahlele in the back of the net. It was Shabba’s 49th goal while wearing the Gold and Black jersey.

It was an entertaining game that Chiefs, deservedly so, won.

This means that Amakhosi have now won their last four league matches.

George Maluleka won the Man of the Match award for Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Free State Stars and he won it again against Maritzburg United for another fine performance.

Chiefs have now collected 30 points from 17 games.
