“This is an important win for the club,” reflects Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Páez on the 2-1 win over Acornbush United. “We realized that time was not on our side as the game progressed, we had to do something different to win this match.”

The Mpumalanga-based side went into the break leading with an opportunistic goal scored against the run of play.

“The coach made the necessary changes when we were trailing,” the Venezuelan striker comments on his introduction as well as those of Hendrick Ekstein and William Twala. “And that became the turning point for us.”

Páez bagged a brace of goals to win it for Amakhosi. It means that he’s now on three goals in the 2017 Nedbank Cup.

‘Tavo’ also pointed out a few technical aspects of the sold out match played at Kabokweni Stadium. “The condition of the pitch made playing good football difficult. The pitch was hard and the heat was virtually unbearable.”

There were water breaks during this tense match due to the sweltering heat.

On progressing to the quarterfinals, Páez modestly comments: “We didn't want to go to extra time and the penalties, because that would have been a lotto scenario. We want to win this cup. However, we take it step by step and one game at the time."

When we reveal that his name, Gustavo Páez, is trendy on social networks, the Venezuelan reacts with a broad smile on his face: “It's good to be popular on social media for the right reasons. It's our aim to make the Kaizer Chiefs supporters happy.”
