Top 8 competition: 15
The Top 8 competition is made up of the clubs that finished in the top eight the previous season. The first Top 8 competition was held in 1972 and was called the BP Top 8 (even though it was known as BP Top 16 and BP Top 32 for a few seasons). Kaizer Chiefs played in that first year, only to lose 3-2 to rivals Orlando Pirates. Amakhosi, however, won the Top 8 competition the following year, beating PUBS (Pimville United Brothers) over two legs in the final. The Top 8 competition final was held over two legs until 1990 – from 1991 it is held over one leg. The competition since 2008 is known as the MTN8.
Since 1972. Known as BP Top Eight Cup (1972-2002), SAA Super Eight Cup (2003-2007), MTN8 (2008- )
