Ace Khuse has joined millions of South Africans in paying tribute to the late, Ernest ‘Botsotso’ Makhanya who passed on last weekend.

Khuse now number two to Vladimir Vermezovic at Kaizer Chiefs has fond memories of the former Bucs midfielder playing with him in the mid 80s at Orlando Pirates and against him towards the late 80s and early 90s.

“I could not believe when Arthur (Zwane) told me about the news of the passing away of Makhanya,” said Ace speaking to kaizerchiefs.com on Tuesday afternoon.

“I met him one Sunday morning in Eldorado Park. They were playing games there as legends and he was recruiting me to join his team.

‘Come play with us, we hammering these teams week in week out’. I could see that he was not the Makhanya I have known for years but he was still passionate about football and wanted to carry on enjoying himself in the Sunday league.”

“Botsotso was also a perfectionist. He was passionate about coaching and always wanted players to do what is right.

“As a person he was quiet and would joke there and there. On the field he was talkative and a tricky player to deal with. He always wanted to be step ahead of his opponents.

He was a very intelligent player on the field and it is a loss to the nation as he had a lot to offer in coaching the youngsters.”

Khuse remembered a game back in 1990 when The Glamour Boys came face to face with Orlando Pirates with Chiefs losing the game 5-1, “He was on fire that afternoon. He dictated things in the midfield and we did not know how to respond.

We came back strongly after that defeat and dominated Pirates for years but I will never forget the way he made us chase shadows losing the game 5-1,” recalled Khuse.

“I would like to take this opportunity and offer my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and former teammates of Botsotso Makhanya. May his soul rest in peace.”

Botsotso Makhanya trained with Kaizer Chiefs in 1994 with a hope of joining the Club but what was going to be a sensational move never materialized.

Makhanya will be laid to rest on Sunday at Chaiwelo in Soweto on Sunday, 04 September 2011.

A Memorial Service has been planned to take place on Friday, 02 September at Chaiwelo Community Centre and will start at 11:00.
