Kaizer Chiefs Ladies are one game away from completing a remarkable second round of the SAFA Gauteng Women’s Provincial League season undefeated.
The Glamour Girls took another significant step towards that milestone on Sunday, producing a commanding 3-0 victory over Mamelodi 11 Stars Ladies at the Kaizer Chiefs Village to return to the top of the league standings on the back of their 12th consecutive win.
It was another performance that underlined the character and consistency that have defined the team’s second-round campaign.
Chiefs Ladies wasted little time in asserting themselves. Lerato Makhanya opened the scoring in the third minute, giving Amakhosazana the perfect start before Lumka Qhekeka doubled the advantage in the 17th minute. They continued to control the contest after the break and were rewarded again in the 65th minute when Matobane Moshugi found the back of the net to seal a convincing victory.
Head Coach Unathi Mabena was pleased with the manner in which her team approached the encounter, particularly against an opponent that demanded concentration and discipline. “We controlled most of the game against a good side. We created a lot of scoring opportunities and, importantly, we stuck to the plan that has been consistent for us throughout the season, which is to dominate and take control of our games,” Mabena said afterwards.
“What pleased me was the way we moved the ball, put our opponents under pressure and continued to look for opportunities to score. We did not become complacent after taking the lead. We remained focused on what we wanted to achieve, and that is important when you are playing against a good team,” she added.
The victory also brought another positive development with the return of Sinenhlanhla Nkosi, who had spent time on the sidelines recovering from injury. Her return adds another option to the squad as the season approaches its conclusion.
With one league fixture remaining, the Glamour Girls’ second-round record makes for impressive reading. Chiefs have gone unbeaten in their last 13 matches, winning 12 and drawing just once.
That run has already secured a top-three finish, a remarkable achievement in their first season. The final league assignment will see Chiefs Ladies hosting the University of Johannesburg on 17 October.
