The Amakhosi ended their long streak without a win against their Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates as they managed to comprehensively defeat them 3-1 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon. Close to 75 000 fans watched Chiefs notch up their first win since May 2008 in league action against Pirates, with a sublime all round team performance from the Amakhosi.



Daine Klate scored an own goal in the 7th minute of the match to get Chiefs on their way, before man of the match Knowledge Musona scored the first of his two goals from the penalty spot just before half time, his second in the 61st minute was a master class in finihing as he made the most of a lapse in the Pirates defense to put Chiefs 3-0 ahead. Ezenwa Otorogu got a late consolation for Pirates as Chiefs cruised to a 3-1 victory.



Itumeleng Khune was called into action in the third minute and stood his ground as Daine Klate curled in a free kick from the right towards goal, the Chiefs keeper punched the ball. Shorlty after the Chiefs keeper made another save coming into cut out Happy Jele's cross from the right.



Chiefs absorbed the early pressure and went on the attack in the seventh minute as Josta Dladla got them moving up field, eventually the ball was played towards Knowledge Musona who hassled and pinched the ball from Pirates skipper Lucky Lekgwathi of the ball on the right touch line. Musona stole a march on goal and after leaving Lekgwathi trailing behind him, he played the ball towards Ngcobo, Klate came into intercept the ball but steered it past Moeneeb Josephs and into his own net, to give Chiefs the lead.



Klate had the opportunity to make amends for his earlier mistake but drove the ball wide from around 18 yards from goal after he latched onto a loose ball off a Chiukepo Msowoya header in the 20th minute. Musona spurnned a great scoring opportunity in the 25th minute, Ngcobo played him in on goal with a quick short pass after Pirates failed to properly clear their lines. Musnoa hit the ball across the face of goal although he beat Josephs the ball narrowly missed the target.



Musona had been tormenting Lekgwathi all through the half and when the Chiefs striker skipped past him in the 42nd minute, the Pirates skipper hacked him down just inside the left corner of the 18 yard area, referee Buyil Gqubule had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Musona dusted himself off and sent Josephs the wrong way from the spot to put Chiefs 2-0 ahead going into the break.



Five minutes after the restart Khune dropped a free kick from Klate into the path of Happy Jele as the Chiefs keeper came back for the ball he took a boot in the face from Jele, who put off by Khune's appraoch hit the ball wide. A minute later Andile Jali's well timed effort almost 25 yards from goal went inches above Khune's goal.



Musona completed his brace just past the hour, Rooi Mahamutsa's failed clearance close to the halfway fell into the path of the Chiefs striker who ran towards goal as Josephs came out to stop him he lobbed the ball over the on rushing keeper and ran past him to head the ball over the line to give Chiefs a 3 - 0 lead.



With around 20 minutes to go Chiefs had two chances within the space of 60 seconds to have pulled further ahead, first up Jimmy Tau drove the ball straight Josephs from inside the Pirates 18 yard area he had Musona free to his right who was in a better position to have finished off the chance. Soon after Reneilwe Letsholonyane hit the ball wide of the mark from a central position on the edge of the after being set up by Jimmy Tau.



In the final quarter Pirates were relentless in attack, the home side managed to pull a goal back through substitute Ezenwa Otorogu in the 77th minutes, on the stroke of time it took a spectacular save from Khune to deny another substitute Mark Mayambela from finding a second for Pirates. As the Chiefs keeper matched the strikers well executed volley with an equally good save.



Chiefs held on for the win which takes them clear in second spot on the league standings as Ajax Cape Town who were tied at second with Chiefs going into Saturday's games lost away at Free State Stars.
