Orlando Pirates                  (2) 2 (Maela 29’, Pule 32’)

Kaizer Chiefs                       (1) 1 (Billiat 15’)

Kaizer Chiefs were edged 2-1 by Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby on Saturday afternoon. The Absa Premiership match was played at FNB Stadium. All goals were scored in the first half. Amakhosi scored first thanks to Khama Billiat after which the Buccaneers netted twice to grab the win.

Khama Billiat and Leonardo Castro were both declared fully fit and started, while Mario Booysen was given the task to lead the defence. Another who made his return from injury was Dumsani Zuma.

The game started a bit tense with both teams needing some time to settle. But it was Amakhosi that found their rhythm first creating a few dangerous looking situations.

FNB Stadium was sold out and there was a magnificent atmosphere.

Chiefs scored the opening goal in the 15th minute. There was a magnificent pass deep from Bernard Parker to Leonardo Castro, whose attempt to cross was blocked. The ball fell in front of Godfrey Walusimbi, who excellently whipped the ball into the box from the left. Billiat couldn’t quite reach the ball, but the Pirates goalkeeper made a meal of things after which the ball fell in front of the Zimbabwean striker, who easily finished from close range, 1-0. It was already Billiat’s fourth league goal this season.

Chiefs continued to be the better side. However, it was Pirates who were awarded a penalty when, according to referee Eketsang Setloboko, Siyabonga Ngezana brought down Ben Motshwari in the box. But Itumeleng Khune brilliantly dived to his right to save Justin Shonga’s shot. That was in the 27th minute.

Two minutes later, the Buccaneers got their goal with Innocent Maela heading the ball from a set-piece past Khune.

There was another set-back soon thereafter, in the 32nd minute, when Augustine Mulenga’s passed the ball sideways in front of goal and found Vincent Pule’s foot, 2-1. It was a difficult period for Amakhosi who had started so well, but they suddenly found themselves a bit on the back foot after Pirates’ two goals.

The half-time score was 2-1. Chiefs came out fighting at the start of the second half and created a good opportunity to equalise in the 58th minute, but Billiat’s shot was blocked by a Pirates defender from going in goal.

Amakhosi continued to try to get back into the game, but it didn’t really work out as planned. It was a disappointing afternoon from a Chiefs perspective.

Key moment in the match:

That must be Orlando Pirates’ second goal which somewhat seemed to break the spirit of the Glamour Boys, as they never really got back into the game after that.

Most Valuable Player (MVP):

Bernard Parker played well and was involved in Kaizer Chiefs’ goal, while Ramahlwe Mphahlele, as usual, moved full of energy up and down the flank. However, it was the Buccaneers’ Augustine Mulenga who was selected as the Absa Premiership Man of the Match.

What it means:

It means that Kaizer Chiefs are still in third spot on the Absa Premiershio log, having 14 points from now 11 games.
