Kaizer Chiefs cemented their place at the top of the Absa Premiership standings with a 2-0 win against second place Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus in Pretoria on Sunday afternoon. The Brazilians were undefeated going into the top of the table clash. Chiefs with two goals from Samir Nurković inflicted Sundowns first league loss of the season. The Serb scoring inside the first ten minutes of the game before sealing the points for Chiefs with a second 12 minutes from time.

Chiefs took the lead in the 7th minute when an in-swinging cross from the right by Reeve Frosler evaded the Sundowns defense and went towards the far post, where a half crouched Nurković knocked the ball over the line to put Chiefs in front as he scored his second league goal of the season.

Some good interplay from Sundowns saw Sibusiso Vilakazi played into space on the half hour mark, his shot from the edge of the 18-yard area went high and wide over goal. Chiefs were forced into making a change in the 34th minute when Frosler was forced off through injury, he was replaced by George Maluleka.

Maluleka tried to make an immediate impact as he tested Kennedy Mweene with a powerfully driven shot from distance. The Sundowns keeper stood his ground to make the stop. Two minutes before the break Sundowns threatened Chiefs goal when a free kick from Gaston Sirino was floated into the danger zone, Motjeka Madisha jumped highest and made contact with the ball but his header went just wide of Daniel Akpeyi’s right hand upright.

In referees added time at the end of the first half, Andile Jali fired the ball high over the goal after being fed into space inside the Chiefs 18-yard area. This was after the Amakhosi had initially failed to properly deal with a Sundowns attack.

A frantic first half ended with Chiefs 1-0 ahead.

Pitso Mosimane made his first change at the start of the second half with Vilakazi with Mauricio Affonzo

Akpeyi was alert in the 52nd minute when he pushed the ball over his goal from a shot on the turn by Ali Meza. A minute on he was diving along the ground to stop a close range effort from substitute Mauricio Affonso.

Affonso was guilty of missing a gilt-edged opportunity in the 57th minute to level the scores. After being found in space inside the Chiefs six- yard area when Meza picked him out with a pass from the right, with the goal gaping he put the ball wide.

Coach Middendorp made his second change in the 68th minute when he took Leonardo off and replaced him with Dumsani Zuma.

Chiefs doubled their advantage in the 78th minute when Nurković completed his brace. It took some fine work from second half substitute Zuma, who glided down the right before cutting the ball back towards Billiat, he scuffed his attempt at goal. Nurković wasted no time as he blasted the loose ball home past a despairing Mweene to put Chiefs 2-0 up.

Nurković had a chance in the 81st minute to score his hattrick but he headed the ball over Mweene’s goal from close range.

During referee’s added time at the end of the second half, Njabulo Blom cleared what looked a certain goal from Affonso off the line to keep Chiefs goal in-tact.
