Kaizer Chiefs                            (1) 4 (Billiat 7’, 60’, 73’ Mahlasela 68’)

Zimamoto                                      0

Kaizer Chiefs beat Zimamoto 4-0 in the first leg preliminary clash of the CAF Confederation Cup. Khama Billiat scored a hat-trick, while Kabelo Mahlasela netted the other goal.

There were quite a lot of changes compared to the Telkom Knockout semis against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, with Virgil Vries, Erick Mathoho, Daniel Cardoso, Teenage Hadebe, Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Kabelo Mahlasela and Dax Andrianarimanana all coming into the starting line-up.

Amakhosi dominated the proceedings from the beginning, getting several opportunities to score.

The first goal arrived in the seventh minute. Kabelo Mahlasela was brought down just outside the box after which Billiat decided to take the free-kick and magnificently put the ball past the goalkeeper into the back of the net, 1-0.

Leonardo Castro nearly added the second in the 13th, after a fine cross from Billiat, who had a fine game. The Colombian striker, however, headed the ball just over the crossbar.

Chiefs got a few chances to extend the lead, but no further goals were scored in the first half.

The Glamour Boys dominated their counterparts from Zanzibar even more in the second half and it resulted in another goal from Billiat. Castro laid the ball back and the Zimbabwean easily slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.

Substitute Bernard Parker delivered a defence splitting left-footed pass to Mahlasela in the 68th minute with the speedy midfielder finishing cleanly from close range. That was 3-0.

Five minutes thereafter, Chiefs were deservedly given a penalty, which Billiat beautifully slotted home from the spot.

There were a few opportunities to score more goals, but it wasn’t to be. Still, the 4-0 win gives Chiefs a nice advantage going into the second leg, which will be played next week.

It was an excellent comeback from the Glamour Boys after their disappointing outing against Orlando Pirates in the weekend.

Key moment in the match:

That will be the moment when Khama Billiat brilliantly put the ball into the back of the net from a free-kick in the seventh minute. It broke the back of the side from Zanzibar that was eventually lucky not to lose with more than four goals.

Most Valuable Player (MVP):

Khama Billiat had an excellent game, Erick Mathoho and Teenage Hadebe kept it tight at the back, while Leonardo Castro was fighting for every ball up-front looking to help his side score goals. Kabelo Mahlasela also put on a sterling performance.
