The fortunes of Amakhosi goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma have taken a distinctly upward turn this season, with the shot stopper establishing himself as the Club’s number one, and earning a recall to the South African national team set-up.

Bvuma returned to Naturena earlier in the week from Algeria, where Bafana Bafana competed in the 2024 FIFA Series, drawing 1-1 with Andorra and 3-3 against Algeria.

“The vibe in the national squad definitely reflects more confidence than when I was last with them, obviously as a result of them doing well at the Afcon, so it was a really pleasant experience,” the 28-year-old notes.

With Ronwen Williams firmly entrenched as first-choice between the posts, as well as captain, Bvuma is content at this stage to bide his time and continue honing his craft in order to be ready to grasp the opportunity, should it present itself.

“It is a benefit for me because I get to work with top quality goalkeepers like Ronwen and Ricardo (Goss), and I am always looking to learn and improve,” he says. “For now, Ronwen is the number one and I must just wait my turn, but even if I don’t play, I value the experience and I return to Kaizer Chiefs a better goalkeeper.”

Bvuma’s attention has already switched focus back to domestic matters and Amakhosi’s trip to the Western Cape for a meeting with Cape Town City at the Athlons stadium on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s always great to get back with the team after a break,” he says, appreciating the warm welcome he received from his teammates on his return from national duty. “The mood in the camp is good and everyone is looking forward to the game. Every game until the end of the season is a big one for us, starting against Cape Town City and we are going to work very hard to get the three points.”
