Kaizer Chiefs                               (1) 2 (Páez 30’, Zuma 67’)

Maritzburg United                            0

Kaizer Chiefs have moved to third spot on the Absa Premiership log after beating Maritzburg United 2-0 in a game at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Glamour Boys scored a goal in each half. Gustavo Páez opened the score in the 30th minute after which Dumsani Zuma added another goal in the second half.

Páez started the game, replacing Leonardo Castro, who got his marching orders in Tuesday’s match against Golden Arrows and was therefore suspended.

Sibusiso Khumalo, meanwhile, got his first game-time in an official match this season.

Chiefs started as the better side, having more ball possession and being more on the opponent’s half than the visitors.

It resulted in an early chance for George Maluleka in the 13th minute. The midfielder got the ball just outside box, then ran into it box, before releasing the ball with a curve at goal. Sadly, the ball just flew past the wrong side of the goalpost.

Maluleka looked to have scored eight minutes later, when he put the ball in goal from the left side. The linesman, however, raised his flag, as he felt that Páez was in an offside position, interfering as well with the sight of the flight of the ball in front of the Maritzburg goalkeeper.

It was eventually Páez who found the back of the net in the 30th minute. Siphiwe Tshabalala laid the ball the backwards towards the Venezuelan striker, who finished nicely from the edge of the box, putting the ball low in the right corner of the goal.

It was Páez’s fourth league goal this season. He had a good game, looking threatening whenever getting close to the opponent’s box.

Amakhosi kept it tight at the back with Siyabonga Ngezana doing well at the centre-back position. Left-back Sibusiso Khumalo also had a fine performance, often joining in attack.

Two more chances came Chiefs’ way in the first half, but both Maluleka and Bernard Parker failed to hit the target.

The visitors upped their game a bit in the second half, even though it didn’t result in any early goalscoring opportunities.

There was a great shot from Tshabalala from outside the box, which just missed the target.

As usual, Willard Katsanda worked his socks off in the midfield, while Maluleka also delivered a fine performance.

And it was Maluleka’s pass deep that found Dumsani Zuma, who had just come on as a substitute for Páez. Zuma superbly chipped the ball over the goalkeeper, who had come off his line, 2-0.

Edmore Chirambadare came on for Molangoane in the 79th minute. The Zimbabwean winger’s last substitution had come against Polokwane City at the end of October 2017.

Maritzburg tried to get back into the game, but Chiefs’ defence was composed and kept any looming danger in check.

It was a well-deserved win from the Glamour Boys after a few tough weeks.

Key moment in the match:

That must be the moment that Gustavo Páez found the back of the net with a low and powerful shot from the edge of the box. It was an excellent goal from the Venezuelan attacker.

Most Valuable Player (MVP):

Kaizer Chiefs delivered overall a good performance as a team. Willard Katsande was that wall again the middle of the park, while Gustavo Páez and Joseph Molangoane did well, especially in the first. But it was Siyabonga Ngezana who was selected as the Absa Premiership Man of the Match for a faultless game.

What it means:

Kaizer Chiefs are now in third position on the Absa Premiership log with 45 points from 29 matches. A third position would mean qualification for the CAF Champions League. Maritzburg United are in fourth position, two points behind Amakhosi.
