Former Kaizer Chiefs players, Doctor Khumalo and Mark Williams were among a group of seven former footballers inducted into the SA Hall of Fame on Friday evening. The duo were joined by their fellow 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winning colleagues Mark Fish and the late Phil Masinga, as well as the late coach Clive Barker. Also among the inductees were former Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana captains, Aaron Mokena and Janine Van Wyk.
Khumalo was gracious in accepting his award. The former Amakhosi captain, who played over 400 games for the club, said, “I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Khosi family for their support and encouragement. I could not have done it without them supporting me every step of the way. Above all, I would like to thank the Chairman for his support and dedication in guiding me through this challenging journey.”
Williams, who like Khumalo, was congratulated by many of his former Chiefs teammates and players from the club said, “For me and what I went through in my football career, it was a wonderful occasion to be honoured while I am still alive. I have seen many players honoured after they have passed and I think it is important they celebrate legends while they are still alive.
“This was one of the biggest teams I played for and I am celebrating this with all my former Chiefs teammates,” he added. “I collected, but it was for all of u. On this occasion, I also remember the late Isaac Kungoane, one of my former teammates who schooled me in the culture of Chiefs. I thank all the guys for acknowledging my achievement and their messages.”
Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Director, Jessica Motaung offered congratulations to the duo: “Doctor and Mark made an impact for the Club and Bafana Bafana. They brought joy and inspired many young people. To be recognised in this way is a deserved honour, and to have our former players recognised in this way is also a mark of honour and recognition for the club.”
With Khumalo and Williams inducted into the SA Hall of Fame the number of personnel linked to Kaizer Chiefs has grown to seven, with the club Chairman Dr. Kaizer Motaung inducted in 2023, while Lucas Radebe, Teenage Dladla, Neil Tovey and the late Ace Ntsoelengoe - the Club’s record scorer - were inducted together in 2024.
