Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt put his team through their final training session ahead of their next game which is a DStv Premiership clash against Black Leopards on Wednesday in Thohoyandou. The game has great significance for both teams.
Amakhosi are currently 11th in the league and were last in action on Saturday in a CAF Champions League Quarterfinal Second Leg game against Simba SC in Tanzania. The Glamour Boys will be looking for a win against 16th placed Leopards, which will help them keep up their chances of finishing inside the top eight at the end of season.
When asked about the heavy travelling schedule after returning from Tanzania on Saturday night and now with another long journey to the north of the country, the Chiefs coach quipped: “We have had one day’s training. Obviously, the game against Leopards is a big one for us. It’s another game right around the corner from the last one, so we will travel up there today and try to prepare for tomorrow.”
Hunt was not unhappy with Chiefs having to travel as it was expected given that Amakhosi were always looking to have a long run in African competition this campaign. “Well, it’s part and parcel of what’s been happening this season, which is good. But we now have to get our league form right.”
While Hunt is nearing 900 career games as a coach with teams in the topflight, he does head to Thohoyandou without Willard Katsande and Njabulo Blom who are suspended, as well as a long-term injury concern for Khama Billiat.
In addition, Dumsani Zuma and Lebohang Lesako are missing through injury. “We have had endless problems for every game. Players have not all been available right from the start of the season. That is what it is, we just have to take this game in front of us on Wednesday. We are going to have a lot of players out on Wednesday due to suspension and injury, so we will have to work with those who are available,” he lamented.
On facing the team he coached for a season back in 2001-02, Hunt says that their front four players are good, but they have not had the best of seasons. He believes it won’t be easy as Lidoda Duvha are still fighting to avoid relegation.
The game is set for the 15:00 kick-off at the Thohoyandou stadium on Wednesday.
