A victory over ZESCO United at Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban on Sunday will give Amakhosi a great chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
Chiefs have been in formidable form since the turn of the year, winning all three of their fixtures (in both the league and Confed Cup) without conceding a goal. Midfield star, Lebohang Maboe, who played in the 1-0 win over ZESCO in Zambia last weekend, believes the team must maintain their good form going forward in order to achieve their ambitions.
“I think we have had a very positive start to 2026. Collectively, we have been working very hard and collecting points, which is great, yet we must keep our feet on the ground and continue to build momentum from this foundation,” he tells www.kaizerchiefs.com.
His partner in the engine room, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, who featured in the midweek Betway Premiership victory over Marumo Gallants in Maboe’s absence, concurred, adding, “We are winning our games and we need more of that. We are confident and looking forward to the game.”
Both men realise the importance of taking all three points on Sunday.
“It’s a very important game for us because we need the points in order to have a chance of getting out of the group stage,” Maboe says. “They are an awkward team to play against so we are not expecting an easy ride, but I believe that the depth in our squad is more than capable of beating them at home.
“They played a lot of long balls and fight for the second balls, so we will counter that. I’m sure we’ll be playing on a better pitch and we will try to frustrate them by keeping possession and find openings in their defence, which we noticed late in the game when they were chasing. If we can get the first goal, they will have to come out and we will try to exploit that.”
‘Mshini’ too is expecting a battle and is glad the team will have a big crowd of supporters inspiring them. “We will have to fight like we fought in the first game. I think it’s an advantage to be at home this time because we will have our amazing supporters there in large numbers and we aim to give them a day to celebrate,” he says.
Maboe adds in closing, “Their support doesn’t go unnoticed. We truly appreciate them coming out in numbers to the stadiums. Seeing them from the field means a lot to us and we will continue to try to do them proud.”
The TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, Group D clash at Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban kicks off at 15:00 on Sunday, 1 February.
