Playing Pirates is always special – Mathoho

Erick ‘Tower’ Mathoho missed out on last Saturday’s Township Rollers game due to a light flu, but the lanky defender will certainly be ready for the upcoming Soweto Derby. “Playing against Orlando Pirates is always special,” he comments.

Amakhosi and the Buccaneers face each other in the Carling Black Label Champion Cup clash at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 29 July (kick-off at 15:30). The tickets have already been sold out.

This will be Tower’s sixth season at Kaizer Chiefs since joining from Bloemfontein Celtic for the 2011/2012 season. The defender started his 150th official game for the Glamour Boys on 29 April 2017, against SuperSport United (two-all draw).

He’s happy with the way pre-season went so far. “We are all getting to know each other better, which bodes well for the future.”

Since the voting started for the Carling Black Label Cup line-ups, Mathoho has been a constant in the top 5 and he’s therefore more than likely to start against the Soweto rivals.

He loves how the supporters are the ones that decide who will play and in what tactical formation for Saturday’s match. “If you get voted in,” he says, “it’s up to you to make the fans happy.”
