Shopane looks ahead to MDS Derby

“There is pressure,” admits Kaizer Chiefs Reserves wing-back Itumeleng Shopane ahead of the MultiChoice Diski Shield group decider against old foes Orlando Pirates Reserves.

“The approach on Sunday is simple. We have to score goals but more importantly, we have to win,” continues Shopane as he envisages the group also comprising of Bidvest Wits Reserves and Highlands Park Reserves being decided on goal difference.

Chiefs Reserves fought from a goal down to see off Highlands Park Reserves in their opening clash of the Shield. The second match saw Amakhosi stumble against Bidvest Wits Reserves despite dominating most of the proceedings.

In Shopane, Chiefs Reserves have a big player on who they can rely after his displays in the inaugural edition of the competition earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

“In order to be recognised, we have to win. We have to go all in for this one because we didn’t win the MultiChoice Diski Challenge,” laments Shopane.

Chiefs Reserves can draw inspiration from their last meeting with Pirates Reserves in this competition as the young Glamour Boys romped to a 6-3 victory en route to lifting the title.

Sitting on three points, Chiefs Reserves have it all to do in this Soweto Derby as Pirates have collected six points. Bidvest Wits Reserves, also on three points, are not out of the running as they will also seek passage out of the group against already eliminated Highlands Park Reserves.

“We spoke as a team and we are mentally and physically ready for Sunday. We have the belief of the coach so we will push extra hard for the team to qualify for the next round,” reassures Shopane.

Kaizer Chiefs Reserves will face Orlando Pirates Reserves at Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale on Sunday, 14 April. Kick-off is set for 12:00.
