My Ten: 10 things you didn’t know about Khama Billiat

  • Khama grew up in Mufakose, a suburb in Harare. His uncle Maxwell Cheche Billiat starred for Caps United and Warriors. The defensive midfielder became a role model for the young talent.

  • His parents are Rosa and Mustafo Billiat. His father also played for Caps United, but he never really made it to the first team. Khama would later on do exactly that.

  • While growing up, he often went to watch Caps United play. Khama’s favourite was the attacking midfielder/winger Alois Bunjira, who went on to play in South Africa for clubs like Bidvest Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns. “He played in the same positions as me,” Billiat explains his choice.

  • Billiat joined the Aces Youth Soccer Academy when still only 10-years-old. He was joined about five years later by Knowledge Musona, who would go on to play for Kaizer Chiefs. Knowledge and Khama became good friends.

  • While with Ajax Cape Town, Billiat starred in a friendly against Manchester United in 2012. His opponent was Rio Ferdidand. Khama kept the lanky defenders on his toes throughout the game, getting compliments afterwards for his performance from none other than Alex Ferguson.

  • Khama and his partner Esnath Munyedawo met in church. They have a 7-year-old daughter, Kimberly.

  • The speedy winger has quite a few tattoos. His favourite is the name of his daughter on his left arm.

  • He likes to be on his PlayStation when having some spare time, usually FIFA 18. The team he plays with are usually Atlético Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Khama loves going out for dinner and occasionally goes to watch a movie.

  • Khama admires Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar. “I don’t want to single one out as the best,” he says. “they are all number one.”

  • He loves to pray, especially before a game – in the bus, while leaving the bus, in the dressing room and before the game kicks off on the pitch. “I ask God for protection.”
