“It was a difficult match,” coach Steve Komphela said after the 3-0 win over Golden Arrows to reach the Nedbank Cup Last 16. “We struggled somewhat in the first half, but the second half was better. It was a good performance from all our players, even though we could have scored one or two more and made it five.”
Komphela complimented Arrows’ coaching staff, Clinton Larsen and his assistant Mandla Ncikazi, for “doing a good job”. He also pointed out that the visitors kept fighting, despite being 3-0 down.
Amakhosi’s Itumeleng Khune was handed the Man of the Match. “He must earn his salary,” Komphela joked, before praising the goalkeeper for another outstanding performance.
He also spoke positively about Leonardo Castro and Siphelele Ntshangase, who both got their first start since joining the Glamour Boys during the January transfer window. “We have to build them up to get fully match fit,” Komphela commented. “They will soon be able to play 90 minutes, but that won’t happen instantly. They can only achieve that when playing competitive games.”
Ramahlwe Mphahlele played in his first game since recovering from injury. “Rama did very well,” the Chiefs coach said.
Ryan Moon, Bernard Parker and Joseph Molangoane scored the goals, which all came in the second half. It was Moon’s fourth goal in five matches, while Parker scored after having had to miss a few games due to injury and came on as a substitute in the second half.
About Parker, Komphela mentioned, “I was happy to have Bernard back in the squad, because he’s highly experienced and has football brains. We all benefit from that.”
Chiefs next host Cape Town City in an Absa Premiership fixture at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 10 February (kick-off at 20:15).
The Glamour Boys are at present in fourth position, seven points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. Cape Town City are one place behind Chiefs, but have the same number of points, having collected 31 points from 20 games.
“The league is very competitive,” Komphela analysed. “It’s not going to be easy, but the challenge for the league title is not over as yet. It’s going to be very tight and interesting.”
