Charity Cup matches swopped to ensure safety

In an effort to reduce the risk of crowd violence, the Premier Soccer League decided on Tuesday to swop around Saturday's two Telkom Charity Cup semifinals at the FNB Stadium.

Andrew Dipela announced that the match between Orlando Pirates and

Kaizer Chiefs would now be played at 12pm, while Ria Stars and

Moroka Swallows would kick off at 10am.

"After the Ellis Park disaster, the football family vowed there

would never be a repeat of this kind of disaster.

"It is a rare commodity to have Chiefs and Pirates involved in a

cup game and the reality is the majority of South Africans love

these clubs.

"And if it means a special effort be made to ensure the safety of

the fans, then so be it."

Dipela said two hours were not enough for all the stakeholders,

particularly security, to sustain the expected crowd.

"Two hours is just not enough, we need time to allow the security

personnel to do everything in their best ability to ensure the

safety of all the fans and still have a fun-filled day.

"There are also other issues which we have to consider like

television: if they can be flexible then it will be easier. This is

the best solution for now.

"We are hoping that in future we will reach a point where we will

be able to control the situation in two hours, irrespective of

which teams are involved."

Chiefs and Pirates agreed with the decision while Swallows reserved

their comment. Stars suggested the kick-off should be delayed by an

hour, but the two Soweto giants should still play first.

The decision was taken after a meeting on Tuesday which involved

the PSL, the four semifinalists, the sponsors, the South African

Police Service, emergency personnel and stadium management.

Tickets are available at Ticketweb at R25 for adults. Tickets for

children will be sold at the stadium at R15 each.
