It’s a different ball game - Komphela

“Every match is different,” Steve Komphela comments about Wednesday night’s Absa Premiership fixture against AmaZulu. “We might have beaten them a few weeks ago, but that was in a cup match. This is a different ball game.”

Kaizer Chiefs beat AmaZulu 3-0 in a Telkom Knockout Last 16 encounter. Amakhosi’s destroyers on that day were George Maluleka, Hendrick Ekstein and Siphiwe Tshabalala.

Komphela and his team traveled yesterday to KwaZulu-Natal for tonight’s assignment with Usuthu. The match is billed for Umlazi’s King Zwelithini Stadium. Kick-off is at 19:30.

“We both have an idea of how we play,” the Chiefs coach remarks. “It is still fresh in our minds, because it wasn’t long ago that we played each other. It’s going to be interesting to see how both teams are going to tweak things around this time.”

Komphela played his cards close to his chest, but hinted at changes in a tactical approach given Wiseman Meyiwa’s suspension.

The young midfielder is serving a two-match ban after receiving his marching order against Bidvest Wits on Saturday.

“We will have some variations in our tactical approach,” the coach reveals, before adding, “We are aware that their coach Cavin Johnson was in the stands during our match against Wits. He might have picked up a few pointers about us, but our game plan is solid enough to still beat them."

“AmaZulu have a strong side. Just check how they were able to bounce back from their loss against us and, accordingly, hold Baroka FC to a draw a few days later. It takes a good team to regroup so quickly after a loss.”

“We are ready,” Komphela concludes. “We have a duty to respond to the disappointment of getting knocked out of the Telkom Knockout. We are all professionals. We know how our supporters feel at this stage and only a win will make them happy.”
