Numerous former players who brought joy and happiness to generations of Kaizer Chiefs supporters since the earliest days of the Club’s existence took time out to congratulate the Club on its 56th anniversary on Wednesday.
The heartfelt message from Lucky Stylianou who, in 1978, became the first white player to represent Chiefs, expresses a love for the Club that remains undiminished by the passage of time.
“Happy 56th birthday, Kaizer Chiefs. Over the decades, players and coaches played their part,” he says. “There has always been a high quality of governance under the leadership of Dr Motaung, people who care deeply for this Club. And, how can we not be full of praise for our knowledgeable supporters? Happy birthday to the most successful soccer club and the biggest sporting brand in South Africa. You are an empire with many victories, trophies and great moments. May the Kaizer Chiefs spirit of excellence continue to thrive.”
Albert Bwalya, whose goal scoring exploits over two spells in the late 1980s and early 90s, earned the endearment of the Amakhosi Faithful, who nicknamed him ‘Mqombothi’, also holds the Club close to his heart.
“Kaizer Chiefs were formed in 1970, when I was just seven years old and, to this day, the club is still running and remains very strong, which is truly wonderful. Happy anniversary, Amakhosi,” he says, adding. “I would also like to thank the Chairman, Dr Kaizer Motaung for his continued commitment to the beautiful game and wish him many more years ahead. We all love him.”
One of Chiefs’ most successful skippers during the 1990s, Neil Tovey, remains loyal and grateful to the Club many years after hanging up his boots, saying, “I’d like to wish Kaizer Chiefs a memorable 56th birthday. We continue to set the norm both locally and internationally from a club perspective and I am extremely, extremely grateful that I was once a player and a captain of Kaizer Chiefs. Thank you very much for what you have done for me, both as a player and as a person, so thank you for that and have the most wonderful birthday.
May there be loads and loads of success in 2026.”
Erstwhile defender from the cohort that followed Tovey’s generation, Nhlanhla Kubheka, gives a glowing tribute with typical erudition, “Happy birthday to Kaizer Chiefs. I must say, you have grown to become a giant whose heartbeat echoes through African football. For generations you have been more than a team. You are a banner of pride, a bond of unity, a living identity carried in the hearts of millions of South Africans. Your story is written in golden moments and legendary names, and with a spirit that rises even when the road is hard.
“As we honour this journey, we honour Dr Kaizer Motaung, whose vision laid the foundation, guarded the legacy and continues to guide the Amakhosi with wisdom, dignity and purpose. Through his stewardship, the Club has remained not just a team but an institution. May this new chapter bring renewed strength, inspired leadership and a triumphant return to the glory that defines the Amakhosi name. Thanks for the memories that shaped us, the passion that unites us and the hope you continue to give to the nation. Khosi 4 Life!”
Let us join in the celebration of another year in the lifetime of our beloved Amakhosi and our unbreakable bond, united together.
