Daniel Cardoso was beaming after Chiefs 2-1 win over Cape Town City in an Absa Premiership match on Tuesday evening as he scored the vital equaliser in Amakhosi’s come from behind win at Newlands Stadium.

Cardoso was featuring in his 80th league game and scored his fifth league goal for Chiefs. Ironically, it was the first time that Amakhosi had won a league game in which he had found the net as they had drawn the previous four in which he scored.

Speaking after the games Cardoso says of his goal: “When I scored, I felt we were back in the game. We were knocking on the door and our efforts paid off. When the goal went in, the team’s spirits were lifted the fans who were phenomenal also received a boost. They kept us going and eventually we got the win.”

The goal brought back memories of his first league goal for Chiefs, which also came in the Mother City against Ajax Cape Town back in February 2017. That game ended 1-1.

“In 2017 at Athlone Stadium I scored when we were 1-0 down against Ajax. It was also a header to make it 1-1. Back then we went on to hit the post and failed to win the game and I was just thinking that this time we need to win the game. Although it never really crossed my mind during the game, I am pleased that the team got a win in a game that I scored in,” he adds.

Overall the Chiefs defender is pleased that the Amakhosi managed to win what was always going to be a very tricky encounter against the Citizens. “Picking up points away against Cape Town City is good for us. If we keep playing like this, teams will fear us.  We were pushing hard for the equaliser and then the win. We spoke ahead of the game about taking advantage when opportunity comes - we discuss a lot before- hand and it was good to put all that planning to good use in the game,” says the defender.

Cardoso was also pleased with the spirit demonstrated by Chiefs in coming back for the second time this season after being a goal down: “Coming back shows we were ready for the fight and we have character. We showed the same spirit against Highlands Park. It shows what this team is about sticking together.  We are ready for the fight. This fire and spirit will take us far.”

With the points in the bag Chiefs can now look ahead to their next league fixture as Cardoso concludes by saying: “This is our best start since the 2014/15 season.  Hopefully we can continue in this way. Starting strong and collecting points early on is good. We need to collect as many points as we can in the first half of the season, which will be vital for us as the season goes on.”
