Cape Town City      (1) 1 (Erasmus 34’)

Kaizer Chiefs          (0) 1 (Nurković 84’)

AET Chiefs wins 4-2 on penalties

Kaizer Chiefs came from a goal behind to defeat Cape Town City 4-2 on penalties at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a Telkom Knockout Last 16 game. Chiefs were trailing in the game when Kermit Erasmus gave the hosts the lead in the 34th minute. Substitute Samir Nurković equalised for Chiefs six minutes from time to send the game to extra time and a penalty shoot-out where Chiefs prevailed winning 4-2 on spot kicks. Daniel Akpeyi set the tone in the shoot-out saving Cape Town City’s first kick taken by Ebrahim Seedat.

Chiefs first opportunity at goal coming in the 16th minute when a well floated free kick from the left by Lebogang Manyama was met by Mulomowandau Mathoho whose header was blocked by Cape Town City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh, with the ball hitting him in the chest.

Amakhosi were dominating play and their initial hard work almost came to fruition in the 28th minute, when quick thinking by Manyama saw him play Billiat out into space on the right. Billiat ran into the Cape Town City danger zone and unleashed a shot.

The shot hit the outstretched hand of Taariq Fielies with the referee pointing to the spot to hand Chiefs a penalty. After the awarding of the penalty City’s Mpho Makola pushed the referee and should have been sent off but only received a yellow card.  From the ensuing spot kick Daniel Cardoso sent his attempt high and wide - an uncharacteristic miss from the defender who is generally ‘Mr. Reliable’ when it comes to penalty kicks.

Chiefs were forced to lose Kearyn Baccus to injury in the 33rd minute as he was stretched off. He was eventually replaced by George Maluleka. A minute later Amakhosi would find themselves a goal down when a ball over the top from the center circle found Erasmus who brought the ball under control with his chest before moving to his right and between two Chiefs goalkeepers. He unleashed a powerful shot which evaded the diving Akpeyi and rattled the net to hand the hosts the lead.

As the half drew to a close, Chiefs would lose Bernard Parker injury and made their second injury enforced change with Nurković entering the fray.

The match went into the break with hosts in the lead.

Five minutes after the restart, a cross from Billiat hit Taariz Fielies who tried to clear the ball which fell to Maluleka, but he drove the ball wide a few yards from goal.

In the 53rd minute Daniel Akpeyi did well to twice stop Erasmus. First he was diving at full stretch to stop his attempt at goal and then he got up to block the City striker as he followed up with the rebound. Erasmus again managed to win the ball and played it to Bradley Ralani whose strike at goal was stopped in a routine manner by Akpeyi.

The action was fast and furious with each team creating a host of chances. In the 63rd minute Akpeyi made a good save stop a shot after a shot at goal from Thabo Ndoda and then in the 68th minute Makola struck the woodwork with a rasping shot from just outside the 18-yard area.

The pendulum swung Chiefs’ way as Manyama forced Leeuwenburgh into making a full-length dive to stop a well taken attempt at goal along the ground in the 73rd minute. A minute on Dumsani Zuma hit a shot from distance on the volley and had the Cape Town City goalkeeper jumping into the air to push the ball away for a corner.

Chiefs pressure paid off in the 84th minute when Cape Town City initially seemed to have dealt with Yagan Sasman’s delivery from the left. The ball was only deflected across to the other wing where Reeve Frosler curled the ball towards goal when Manyama managed to flick the ball with his chest into the path of Nurković who volleyed the ball home to bring Chiefs level and send the game to extra time.

In extra time, Chiefs carved out a chance in the 95th minute when Nurković dived to head a ball from the right across goal when Mathoho managed to get a touch on the ball but Leeuwenburgh managed to stop the ball on the line.

With the teams deadlocked after 120 minutes they went into penalties. Cardoso who missed a penalty in normal time scored Chiefs first in the shootout. Akpeyi then saved Ebrahim Seedat’s penalty, while Fielies missed his spot-kick. Even though Manyama missed Chiefs fourth kick, Leonardo Castro, Billiat and Mathoho scored theirs to send Chiefs into the last eight of the Telkom Knockout.
