Amakhosi will start their domestic football in 2021 with a DStv Premiership tie against Maritzburg United this afternoon at FNB Stadium. The team started their year with a clash against Angolan side Primeiro de Agosto in Luanda on Tuesday. Amakhosi won the game to advance to the group stages of the continental competition.

Chiefs and Maritzburg have already met this season in the MTN8 competition and Amakhosi won the match 2-1, with Yagan Sasman scoring a brace. Eric Tinkler was in charge of United at the time and was later replaced by former Chiefs mentor Ernst Middendorp.

Coach Gavin Hunt will be without a few of his regulars for various reasons. Mulomowandau Mathoho lost his father on Thursday and has been given time off, while Philani Zulu is suspended and Lebogang Manyama will miss his second game in a row.

Daniel Akpeyi is this afternoon's goalminder.

Coach Hunt has had to reshuffle defence due to Mathoho and Zulu’s unavailability. Ramahlwe Mphahlele will be partnered by Siyabonga Ngenzana at the centre of Amakhosi’s defence. The left and right-back positions will be manned by Daniel Cardoso and Njabulo Blom, respectively.

The young Darrel Matsheke will  start his second game in a row as he partners Anthony Akumu Agay in midfield. They will be joined Bernard Parker and Lazalous Kambole, who will also link up with the strikers..

Amakhosi’s striking force will see the reliable duo of Khama Billiat and Leonardo Castro work together again.

Mphahlele will again wear the captain’s armband this afternoon.

The officiating team is made up of referee Eugene Mdluli and his assistants Athenkosi Ndongeni and Cledwin Baloyi. The fourth official will be Joseph Makhubo.

The Glamour Boys and The Team of Choice will kick off at 17:00  at FNB Stadium. No spectators will be allowed in the stadium.. The game will be live on SuperSport Channel 202 and there will be updates of the match on Twitter @KaizerChiefs.
