Mamelodi Sundowns                      0

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns played to a goalless draw in an Absa Premiership match at a sold out FNB Stadium on Saturday night. However, despite the lack of goals, the game was an enthralling affair with both sides getting numerous chances to score.

Kgotso Moleko, Siyabonga Ngezana and Dumsani Zuma all came into the starting line-up compared to last weekend’s 2-1 win over Baroka FC. They replaced respectively Joseph Molangoane (suspended), Erick Mathoho and Gustavo Páez, who both started on the bench.

The match started 15 minutes later than planned as there were still queues in front of the turnstiles. There was, however, a magnificent atmosphere in the stadium with 70 000 spectators in attendance.

The first half was a real spectacle with Chiefs getting most of the best opportunities in front of goal.

The first chance arrived in the eighth minute for Zuma after Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango failed to clear properly when closed down by Ryan Moon. The Chiefs striker got the ball, passed to Siphiwe Tshabalala who laid the ball off to Zuma, whose shot failed to end up in the goal.

Soon hereafter, Teenage Hadebe received a yellow card, his fourth this season, which means that the defender will miss next week’s match against Bidvest Wits.

In the 14th minute there was another goalscoring opportunity. Tshabalala took a corner with Moon heading the ball at goal, but it flew just wide.

This was followed by a long range shot from Zuma, which was well saved by Onyango.

Barely a minute later, Sundowns’ Percy Tau put the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed due to offside - correctly so.

The visitors came a little bit more into the game during the last ten minutes, which resulted in a chance for Tau, but his header was well kept out goal by the in-form Itumeleng Khune.

The first half ended goalless, but that was somewhat surprising considering the chances both sides got. It was certainly an entertaining half to watch.

Zuma looked threatening whenever having the ball, while Willard Katsande again won numerous balls in midfield. Another who did well was left-back Philani Zulu, whose runs on the flank often put the Sundowns defence on the back foot.

The fun continued in the second half with both sides again attacking whenever having the opportunity to do so.

The supporters got excited when they saw Leonardo Castro going to warm-up after about ten minutes of play in the second half. He eventually came on for Moon in the 63rd minute.

Five minutes later, coach Steve Komphela decided on another substitute, bringing on Páez for Tshabalala.

Sundowns hit twice the woodwork in the 78th minute. Firstly, it was Tau who hit the upright, followed by substitute Jeremy Brockie, whose shot ended on the sidebar.

Siphelele Ntshangase did well after coming on, distributing some fine passes to his teammates. The midfielder had come on for Zuma, who had an excellent first half, but ran a bit out of steam in the second.

There was an excellent chance for Katsande to score the winner in the 87th minute, but his header failed to hit the target.

It was a fascinating match to watch and Chiefs were the better side, but the ball just didn’t want to hit the back of the net.

Most Valuable Player (MVP):

Willard Katsande played again his heart out in midfield and Dumsani Zuma had a superb first half, putting the Sundowns defence under continuous pressure. Another who did well, again, was Itumeleng Khune, who made a few fine saves. However, it was Daniel Cardoso who received the Absa Premiership Man of the Match for his excellent defensive display and for brilliantly organising his backline.

What it means:

Amakhosi are still in third spot on the Absa Premiership log, having collected 30 points from 19 games, which is as many as second placed Orlando Pirates. Because of the draw, Kaizer Chiefs continue to be five points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
