Unathi Mjijwa delivered a performance for the history books, becoming the first player to score a hat-trick for Kaizer Chiefs Ladies in an official match, and inspiring the Glamour Girls to an emphatic 5-0 victory over NWU at the Vaal Campus on Saturday.
The victory was Chiefs Ladies' third win of the Gauteng Women's Provincial League season and their second-biggest winning margin of the campaign, continuing the team's encouraging progress in their maiden season.
Having shown signs of improvement in recent weeks, the team produced one of their most complete performances against NWU. Their attacking intent was evident from the opening whistle, and they were rewarded with a two-goal lead before the interval.
Mjijwa opened the scoring with a composed finish in the 29th minute before Sphiwe Dlamini added a second six minutes later to send Chiefs into the break with a deserved 2-0 advantage.
The visitors maintained their dominance in the second half, controlling possession and creating a host of opportunities. At the heart of the attacking display was Mjijwa, who added two further goals to complete a memorable hat-trick and secure her place in Amakhosi history as the first Kaizer Chiefs Ladies player to score three goals in an official fixture. Lumka Qhekeka also found the back of the net. It was her first goal of the season as Chiefs completed a convincing win accompanied by a clean sheet.
While the result reflected a strong collective effort, the day undoubtedly belonged to Mjijwa. Reflecting on the achievement, she remained focused on the team effort behind the victory.
"I'm very happy to have scored my first hat-trick and to make history for the Club," she said afterwards, adding, "But more importantly, I'm proud of the team's performance because everyone worked hard for this result. We have been improving with every game and today we were able to turn our chances into goals. I want to thank my teammates and the technical team because this achievement would not have been possible without their support. We now need to stay focused and continue building on this performance in the matches ahead.”
The victory gives the team valuable momentum ahead of another challenging weekend of league action, with back-to-back fixtures against Mito Stars on Sunday and an away fixture against Mamelodi 11 Stars on Sunday.
