After the last FIFA International break of the year 2021, Kaizer Chiefs will swing back into action this coming weekend when travel to the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg to face Maritzburg United in the DStv Premiership on Sunday.

Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota says the break was welcomed after the Soweto Derby as it helped them rest and regenerate before getting back on the field and competing in the league.

“We rested a bit during the break, but we’ve been back at training for a number of days and fully focused on the next game,” says a confident Sekgota. “We have been preparing for Maritzburg and are aware that their coach has some information about our team because he was here two seasons ago.”

Kaizer Chiefs players who travelled for national team duties with South Africa, Nigeria and Zimbabwe have rejoined their colleagues at the Kaizer Chiefs Village as they prepare for the game against United.

“Our preparation was not hugely affected by other players’ absence because they were training with the national teams,” adds the speedy Sekgota. “We also kept in contact with some of them that were representing us and we were fully behind them with our support and hoping they do well. We are happy to have them back in the fold so we can all now focus on the next match.”

Sunday’s match will be the first meeting between Amakhosi and The Team of Choice in this campaign. The two outfits last met in the previous season in the league and they shared the spoils with the encounter ending 1-1. The game took place in March 2021 at Maritzburg’s home venue.

“Maritzburg will not be easy and they have not been an easy team to beat when they play at home,” concludes Sekgota. “They also have also not had the greatest of starts so they are looking for maximum points. “They will want to start picking up points so they can move away from the bottom half and we are aware of it. We are also looking for the three points so we can move up the log table. It will be a tough game.”

Chiefs and Maritzburg will kick off their eleventh DStv Premiership match of the season at 17:30 at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday. No spectators will be allowed in the venue. The match will be live on SuperSport Channel 202.
