Kaizerchiefs.com were part of a large media contingent given access on Wednesday afternoon to Bafana Bafana’s training session as they prepare for a crucial 2023 AFCON qualifier against Morocco in Rabat on the 9th of June at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

The training session held at Sturrock Park in Johannesburg on the campus of the University of the Witwatersrand included Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma and midfielder Phathutshedzo Nange, who are part of coach Hugo Bross’ squad for the crucial game against the Atlas Lions.

Bvuma was the last off the Bafana Bafana team bus and was happy to see familiar faces tracking his progress with the national team, as South Africa is currently in Group K, which also includes Liberia and is made up of just three teams, with the top two teams qualifying after Zimbabwe were disqualified.

Coach Hugo Broos confirmed that first-choice goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was hampered by an injury he picked up on Monday during SuperSport United’s win over Orlando Pirates in the DStv Premiership. The Belgian mentor was confident thought that Williams will be fit to face the Moroccans. Should he though be unavailable the coach has faith that Chiefs’ Bvuma or AmaZulu’s Veli Mothwa will be able to do well if called on.

Broos in his pre training briefing was joined by Williams and Cape Town City’s Khanyiso Mayo, whose father Patrick won two league titles with Chiefs in 2003-04 and 2004-05, and a host of domestic cup titles with Amakhosi.

He scored for Bafana Bafana against Morocco in a 2004 AFCON Group stage game in a 1-1 draw, Mayo senior was called up for the tournament held in Tunisia 18 years ago based on his good club form for Chiefs at the time.

Bafana Bafana could also play a friendly game in 2022 FIFA WC host nation Qatar on their return from Morocco against Iran, which is yet to be confirmed according to Broos.

Kaizer Chiefs would like to wish Bvuma and Nange and their Bafana Bafana teammates all the success for the clash against the Atlas Lions.
