Kaizer Chiefs are proud to announce that five of the Club’s Youth Development Academy players have been selected for the 23-man South Africa Under-20 squad that will participate in the upcoming COSAFA U-20 tournament in Mozambique. Goalkeepers, Takalani Mazhamba and Keabetswe Morake, defender Egan Freese, midfielder Teboho Mlangeni and attacker Steven Mendez will all represent Amajita in the prestigious regional competition.

Head Coach. Raymond Mdaka confirmed his final squad on Wednesday before the team’s departure to Mozambique the following day, where South Africa will face Lesotho, Angola and Eswatini in the group stage. The squad had been in camp in Johannesburg since Tuesday, 8 September, with Mdaka assessing the 31 players on his preliminary list before trimming it down to the final 23.

Amajita enter the tournament as double defending champions, having lifted the trophy in the last two editions, and will be aiming to secure one of the two available spots for the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for Ghana in 2027. Success at the continental showpiece will also open the door to the FIFA U-20 Men’s World Cup, which will be staged in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan next year. Lazola Maku has been named captain of the squad, with Amakhosi’s own Takalani Mazhamba serving as vice-captain.

South Africa have been drawn in Group B and will begin their title defence against Lesotho on Saturday, 19 September at 12:00, followed by a clash with Angola on Monday, 21 September at 15:00, before rounding off the round robin stage against Eswatini on Wednesday, 23 September at midday. The winners of each group, along with the best runner-up, will advance to the semifinals.
