The keenly awaited Soweto Derby has arrived. South Africa’s biggest Club, Kaizer Chiefs, face their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in what is the ninth Betway Premiership fixture of the season for both sides.
This iconic rivalry reaches its 186th official chapter today. Of the previous 185 encounters, Amakhosi have claimed 75 victories, Pirates have secured 50 wins, and 55 matches have ended in draws.
Both teams come into the clash on the back of emphatic midweek triumphs in the Carling Knockout Cup. Chiefs walloped TS Galaxy 3-0, while the Sea Robbers dispatched newcomers Milford FC by the same margin.
Coach Fernando Da Cruz has made just one change from Tuesday’s starting lineup, with Inacio Miguel returning to replace Rushwin Dortley in central defence.
Amakhosi will once again line up in a 4-3-3 formation.
Brandon Petersen in goal.
The back four consists of Paseka Mako on the left, Thabo Moloisane and Miguel in the heart of defence, and Reeve Frosler on the right.
The anchor man in midfield is Sibongiseni Mthethwa. He is supported by Lebohang Maboe and Mduduzi Shabalala just in front of him.
In attack, Pule Mmodi runs on the left wing, Mfundo Vilakazi takes the right, and Wandile Duba, who is fresh from his midweek hat-trick leads the line.
Charged with refereeing duties are Luxolo Badi, assisted by Zakhele Siwela and Romario Phiri. The fourth official being Moreki Lekwape.
Petersen is the skipper.
The big Soweto Derby match between the Phefeni Glamour Boys and the Buccaneers starts at 15:30 at FNB stadium in Nasrec. The game will be live on and SuperSport’s Channel 202 on DStv and SABC 1, as well as various SABC radio stations. The Club will provide live commentary on X (formerly known as Twitter).
