Kaizer Chiefs will begin their bid for a record extending 14th League Cup title when they face TS Galaxy in a Round of 16 clash at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening. Chiefs won their first title in 1983 when the tournament was still known as the Datsun Cup, with their last coming in 2010/11, a 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates in the Telkom Knockout Cup final.

Prior meetings with Galaxy

The two previous cup matches between the sides came in the Nedbank Cup, with TS Galaxy winning both games 1-0 - in the 2018/19 Final and a Round of 32 game at the FNB Stadium in February 2022. The most recent meeting between the sides came in a league clash back in April which ended in a 2-0 home win for Chiefs, with goals from Flavio Silva and Glody Lilepo. Earlier in the campaign they drew 0-0.

Before Chiefs’ win in April, their previous four games had all ended in draws. That win ended a 10-game winless run for Chiefs against Galaxy in all competitions. Overall, the sides have met 14 times in all competitions, Chiefs have two wins to Galaxy’s three, nine games have ended in draws; five have ended 0-0.

Amakhosi Knockout Cup History

TS Galaxy were finalists in the 2023/24 tournament, losing to Stellenbosch on penalties. It is the furthest they have reached in the League Cup, while Chiefs have won 13 titles - more than any other team - enjoying a particularly successful spell between 1997 and 2007. In that decade, Amakhosi won six titles, including back-to-back triumphs in 1997/98 and 1998/99, as well as in 2003/04 and 2004/05. Chiefs also reached four successive finals between 2001 and 2004, winning three.
